The message of Deuteronomy is to listen to God, obey him, and love him with all your heart, soul , and strength. Jesus taught that this was the greatest command, Everywhere we go, we should seek to love God. Only if you consider love to be an emotion can it not be commanded. The kind of love commanded here and elsewhere is “a servant of will, not a victim of emotion. “a love based on the nature of the one who loves, rather than the merit of the one who is loved: not coziness or affection, not a predisposition based on attractiveness, not an emotion or a feeling, but a spiritual discipline, set our hearts on God to love.
