I always thought that being anointed by God meant that you will automatically be successful.  We get to see with many different characters in this book that even though God has anointed them for a position, God still needs their heart to be true to Him.  Eli was anointed, but his heart was not right and he and his sons were killed due to their transgressions against God.  Saul was anointed as King, but His heart was not right towards God and God lifted His hand from Him and allowed tormenting spirits to come upon him.  God anointed David to come into place as King and continued to have Godś protection over Him even as He was being pursued by Saul because David was always faithful to God.  Submission to God is still required even after anointing.
