This is the book that describes of how the Israelites were preparing to enter the Promised Land over and over by their constant cycle of sinning, being punished and coming back to try again. There was a census done by Moses counting the Israelites into the marching units so that they could better defend themselves and know their size and the second was how they were planning to conquer the country east of the Jordan river. Due to their rebellion by not going and occupying the land that God told them he would deliver into their hands, the people were forced to go in circles for 40 years wandering the wilderness when they could have just enjoyed peace and prosperity by being obedient to what God has asked and told them to do. Canaan was the place called the Promise Land but it would be inherited by the younger generation once the disobedient generation all died because they were not worthy to enter it because of their disobedience of the Lord that took them all out of Egypt and constantly provided for their needs just not in the ways that they had wished and hoped for.
